T.O.W. – Week 16

For our final week of topics, we are asked to create a list of helpful tips for PR students who are new to blogging. Here are my tips, hopefully they are helpful.

  • It should be fun, not a task.
  • Keep up with it as much as possible.
  • Communicate on others’ blog pages.
  • Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion.
  • Keep an open mind.
  • Be prepared to learn.
  • Enjoy your blog.
  • Take pride in your blog.
  • Learn how to use all of the useful tools in blogging, such as hyperlinks etc.

I believe students should be able to enjoy their blogs, I didn’t think I would but I did. It feels good go speak your mind once in a while.

T.O.W. – Week 15

For week 15, we are to explain what a SMNR is.

A SMNR is a social media release. It is a media release that is open for people to comment on and also to help spread thoughts or views. Many of these instances are used by posting on a website. This will enable people to take this information and leave a person though to it. It can help people understand something and then make their own decision and share it with others. It can be shared by using blogs, forum posts, and just simply having a comment section at the bottom.

I find these to be the most interesting and fun form of a public relations tool. Not only do I enjoy spreading my own thoughts on forums or comment sections. But I also can see myself enjoying the creation of one.

T.O.W. – Week 14

For week 14, we were required to take another online course. This time on multi-media storytelling. The course is located at website .

I learned that there are many things that go into creating these such as a homepage, bio, and the quest among other things.

I was surprised that I had no idea on how to go about creating one.

I would like to know how to tell a story in multi-media format in a more easy way. I may need someone to show me exactly how to do it in person rather than a webclass. However it was still very useful in giving me a basic knowledge of the tool.

T.O.W. – Week 13

For week 13 we were supposed to give 10 ways that PR practitioners can drive journalist crazy and how to not do so. I will attempt to cover these in list form.

  1. Using PR jargon – simply use language that you think the average person would know, not just PR pro’s
  2. Constantly contacting them – give them time, don’t keep bothering them if you don’t see an assignment not done in time.
  3. Ignoring them – This one is a no-brainer,  don’t ignore your journalist, be constructive and work with them. ignoring only makes it worse.
  4. Being too friendly – This is done too much. Don’t be fake to journalist, or anyone else for that matter, most of the time it’s obvious.
  5. Not using correct format – journalist are busy and don’t need to be doing your work too. Do it correctly.
  6. Not knowing deadlines – As a professional you should always be aware of your deadlines as it is your job.
  7. Presenting time and not facts – Journalist again, are very busy. Only facts will be of importance to them.
  8. Sending irrelevant releases – Make sure your press releases are of relevance to the assignment.
  9. Asking for their feature lists – Their job is confidential, don’t push them to release information to you.
  10. Sending out mass info – Again, don’t waste their time, only send them things they will use.

I used the book for many of these, and a few websites to fill the rest.

T.O.W. – Week 12

For week 12 we were required to listen to an hour of Public Relations podcasts.

For my choice, I first chose to listen to InsidePR’s podcast. Terry and Dave talked to a CEO of a major company about the role of Public Relations. He also gave us a few tips on what we should be prepared to do when we start looking for jobs.

Next I chose to listen to another segment of their podcast. This time it was about the role of twitter in public relations. It was interesting to hear it from practitioners, the importance of twitter. Before taking this class I had no idea twitter has become a major and useful tool in the department of Public Relations.

These podcast are actually decently interesting, contrary to my initial thoughts about them. I can see why they are in existence and the role they have in Public Relations.

T.O.W – Week 11

For topic of the week 11. We were assigned to write about infographics.

I read that Infographics are computer-generated artwork that attractively displays simple tablets and charts.

Charts are easy to read and give people a different way to look at numbers, percentages and other dynamics that words just simply can’t cant get across as effectively. Different charts include pie charts, bar charts and basic graphs.

These can be created with the use of Microsoft Office and Power Point. These programs can be used with relative ease, allowing people of all skill levels to create them. Unfortunately, I don’t have these programs on my home computer but I do know how to use them.
